Why is technology bad for us? It seems like it’s impossible to avoid this question with all the advances we’ve seen in computers and technology over the years. From the earliest forms of computers, we’ve seen them influence our lives in every way. From the very first PDA to the personal digital assistants that are all over the place (think: Amazon’s Echo) – we have benefited from technology. It has given us access to information at a fraction of what it would cost us to go into a library or bookstore, and it’s allowed us to share ideas and experiences with people around the world.
But is technology really that bad for us? What can we do when we use it? I believe that technology can be both good and bad, depending on how we handle it. Let’s take a look at the three ways in which technology can be bad, and then look at how it can be beneficial to us.
Bad for us in one way is that it makes us dependent on things like the Internet for our communications. Without the ability to communicate through email, sending a letter, calling a friend, or even writing a letter of the self can be very difficult. We rely on these electronic forms of communication for our everyday work. Technology also keeps us up-to-date with the most recent news, movies, and music – and we can’t do without these sources of entertainment without the Internet.
Bad for us in another way is that it requires so much computer knowledge to be successful online. Learning HTML, making website pages, understanding search engine optimization, and more can be a very complicated tasks for someone who hasn’t used the technology before. As well, there are a number of scams out there that promise people make thousands of dollars per day online by using only the computer, Internet connection, and a software program. There is also the issue of cyber-theft – hackers stealing information that can be very harmful to the consumer.
Bad for us physically is the fact that technology makes many tasks very difficult. Carrying a laptop around, being able to navigate the Internet, and connecting to cell phones all require a lot of physical strength and coordination. Working in an office that requires you to use a computer is not good for your body either. Sitting at home watching television or surfing the Internet is extremely relaxing, but it is incredibly difficult for your body to adjust to.
Bad for us psychologically is the effect that technology has had on our relationships. The reason that we are so addicted to technology is that it takes a lot of effort to go away from it. We may be working a job that we really don’t enjoy anymore, and instead of being able to disconnect from the Internet, we simply resort to checking our e-mails or surfing the Net. This creates a psychological barrier between ourselves and the outside world, making us less able to connect to other people.
Bad for us socially is the impact that it has made to date. In this society, you can easily find someone online that you would probably never be able to get a chance to meet in person. You can chat with them, send them messages, and share countless other conversations with them throughout the Internet. This makes it hard for relationships to develop.
Why is technology bad for us? There are many different answers to that question. However, it’s important that we continue to evolve with technology and learn how to control it. Without having control, technology can have a negative impact on everyone. It will be so bad that no one will be able to use it to their advantage.
